Don’t Shrug Your Shoulders!

Do you get sore neck and shoulders from this erratic weather? I am seeing more and more clients with the same neck and shoulder issues. It is getting cold, we can’t avoid it any longer. This is one reason why you should bundle up and layer on your scarves. What you may not know is many people elevate their shoulders unconsciously when the weather gets cold and naturally this leads to rounding of shoulders and a forward head posture. Over time neck and shoulders develops stiffness and many even suffer from headaches too. Keeping warm is one way to avoid this; another way will be regularly doing simple neck and shoulder stretches.

Twice a day and hold the stretch for 30 seconds each time:

  1. Bring your arm up and place your palm flat on one side of the doorway, gently push your body forward until you feel a gentle stretch on your chest. You are stretching your pectorals and this will open up your chest. Repeat on the other side.
  2. Tilt your head to one side, approximating ear to shoulder without elevating your shoulder. This stretches your Levator Scapulae. Making sure you are breathing all the way through, and repeat on the other side.
  3. Approximate your chin towards your armpit, again without elevating your shoulders. This stretches your Trapezius muscle that often produces headaches whenever it gets stiff. Make sure you are not holding your breath once again, as breathing helps the muscles lengthen and relax.
